Steel welded reinforcement mesh is placed on top of the membrane. This reinforcement:

• Controls shrinkage cracking 
• Add tensile strength 
• Helps spread loads across the slab 

The black plastic sheet covering much of the floor is the damp proof membrane.

It's purpose is to stop moisture rising into the concrete, prevent water loss from fresh concrete

during curing and protect the floor finishes. The membrane is overlapped at the joints and is taped to keep it watertight.  

Section 5 Soils and Support Structures 

Along the slab edges are embedded joint assemblies. These contain:

• Dowel bars 
• Load transfer plates 
• Crack inducers 

Their job is to:

• Transfer forklift loads 
• Minimise differential settlement 
• Allow controlled movement
