The article on how reinforcement helps cracking in this months edition of the magazine provided by the Concrete Society was absolutely cracking, literally! The article goes like this:
There is a widely held belief that reinforcement helps to prevent cracking, a myth that is promoted by fabric reinforcement often being referred to as “anti crack reinforcement”.
In reality adding steel reinforcement only leads to a small (5-10%) increase in the uncracked strength of a concrete member. The article also goes on to state that while steel reinforcement doesn’t prevent cracking, it does control cracking, limiting the number and width of cracks that do occur (providing it meets the minimum proportion).
