Level Best Concrete Flooring, the innovative Yorkshire-based concrete flooring expert, have recently delivered a completely joint-free concrete floor for a new warehouse development in Witham, Essex. This development is associated with the government-back Freeport East investments in the Suffolk, Felixstowe, Harwich and Colchester.
A requirement for a joint-free warehouse floor was driven by the end-user’s racking requirements. Typical warehouse concrete floor sawn induced joints were problematic for this mobile racking system, reducing flexibility due to joints located at 5-6m centres in both directions. Level Best worked closely with their steel fibre supplier Bekaert, Europe’s leading fibre manufacturer, to produce a completely joint-free solution combing both traditional steel fabric mesh and steel fibre reinforcement, allowing typical joint spacing practices to be maximised providing greater benefit for the Essex-based distributor.
The client and end-user will also benefit from reduced life cycle costs and improved warehouse safety. A jointless combi-slab solution reduces future maintenance requirements associated with joint breakdown, joint repairs and forklifts repairs. A safer working warehouse environment will also be present in Witham, Essex as the risk of incidents around forklifts trafficking damaged joints is mitigated by the omission of joints.
Level Best applied a fibre-suppressing dry-shake topping on completion of the steel fibre integration, concrete compaction and laser screed placement. Dry shakes toppings are applied to the wet concrete surface and worked in monolithically with the main concrete matrix to suppress steel fibres at the concrete surface. The correct application of this material is critical in avoiding future maintenance and safety concerns with protruding steel fibres. Clients and end-users can also benefit from more aesthetic, uniformed concrete surface.
